Most people count on their driver’s licenses for long-distance travel and short daily commutes. However, it is important to understand the ways in which a Texas driver’s license can be suspended or revoked.

There are many forgotten driving laws in Texas that can cause motorists to lose their licenses. Without a license, people face many inconvenient and challenging circumstances.

Most people are aware that driving privileges can be revoked for operating a vehicle under the influence of drugs or alcohol. But there are many other reasons for which a license may be suspended or taken.

Refusing Blood and Breath Tests

If a driver is operating their vehicle in a careless or dangerous manner, law enforcement may pull them over. Officers are permitted to require motorists to submit to a breath or blood test if they suspect intoxication.

Drivers who refuse to submit to one of these intoxication tests can face an administrative suspension of their driver’s license. Some people are unaware of this legal requirement in the state of Texas.

Stealing Gasoline

Everyone knows that stealing another person’s property is a criminal violation. However, many people do not know that the theft of gasoline can also have consequences for driving privileges.

When someone is convicted of stealing automotive fuel, their license may be taken away.

Using Fake IDs or Drinking While Underage

Underage drinking is also a valid reason for the suspension or revocation of the perpetrator’s license. Those under 21 years of age may face these penalties if they drive under the influence.

Similarly, using a fraudulent driver’s license to purchase alcohol can result in the revocation of your driving privileges. It is important to speak with an attorney if your license has been taken or suspended.

Exceeding the Moving Violations Threshold

A moving violation does not automatically result in the revocation or suspension of your driver’s license in the state of Texas. However, having too many violations within a certain time frame can result in those penalties.

Moving violations in the state of Texas include:

  • Traveling over the speed limit
  • Running red lights or failing to stop at stop signs
  • Improper turns or lane changes
  • Using a cell phone or other electronic device while driving
  • Tailgating or following too closely
  • Reckless and negligent driving
  • Operating a vehicle without a valid registration
  • Failing to yield the right of way
  • Not signaling when changing lanes or turning
  • Failing to properly secure a load on a truck or trailer

If you have four or more moving violations within a 12-month period, your license may be in danger. The same is true if you have seven moving violations within a 24-month period.

Driving While Uninsured

Under Texas state law, drivers are required to have certain types of insurance coverage. Texas motorists are only required to carry a minimum amount of liability insurance coverage.

This type of insurance policy will pay anyone who is victimized by the policyholder’s negligent behavior. For example, liability coverage may repay accident victims for the following:

  • Medical bills
  • Funeral expenses in wrongful death cases
  • Lost wages and income
  • Vehicular property damage
  • Necessary rental car costs

If you drive without the required minimum automotive insurance, you may lose your license in Texas. This is especially true if you are uninsured at the time of a motor vehicle accident.
