Types of Knee Injuries

There are many types of knee injuries. They range in severity. You should always seek medical evaluation and treatment after you have suffered a knee injury.

Dislocation

The kneecap and knee joints are vulnerable to dislocation. These kinds of dislocations can damage tissues around the knee, including tendons, ligaments, and blood vessels. Knee dislocation can also require amputation if you fail to get prompt and effective treatment.

Dislocation is usually caused by a high-impact trauma to the knee.  Dislocation may be obviously visible by looking at the knee after the impact.

Fracture

Fractures are broken bones. The knee joint has multiple bones and any of them can be fractured by even moderate impacts.

Fractures can be complicated by inflammatory diagnoses (arthritis) or injury to the major artery running down the leg, called the femoral artery.

Knee Sprain or Strain

A knee sprain is an injury to the ligaments in the knee, usually characterized as a tear or stretched ligament. The four major ligaments of the knee connect the upper and lower parts of the leg at the knee joint. Injury to each of these four ligaments has its own name and description.

Anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) The ACL and the posterior cruciate ligament (PCL) form an X-shaped support for the knee joint, protecting against front-to-back and back-to-front force. It limits the extension of the knee and protects from torquing motions.

The ACL is one of the most commonly injured knee ligaments. It can be injured by:

  • An abrupt stop
  • A wrench or twist while changing direction
  • A hyperextension or over straightening of the joint
  • A direct impact to the outside of the knee or lower leg

When you tear your ACL, you may experience intense pain that is worsened by motion. One common sign of an ACL sprain is a “pop” inside the knee at the moment of injury. Then, you may experience substantial swelling in the knee in the hours after the injury, followed by black and blue bruising. ACL tears cause severe knee pain and knee instability, often limiting the ability to walk or even stand.

Posterior cruciate ligament (PCL) The PCL runs behind the ACL across the center of the knee. It can be sprained by a direct impact to the front of the knee, especially when the knee is bent.  For example, if a knee hits a dashboard while sitting in a car.

Symptoms of PCL sprains include mild knee swelling, with or without knee instability. You may have difficulty moving your knee and your pain may worsen with kneeling.

Medial collateral ligament (MCL) The MCLis the most often damaged ligament in the knee. It runs along the inside of the leg. Damage to the MCL can be caused by a direct sideways impact to the outside of the knee or lower leg. The MCL can also be torn by a twist in the knee, particularly during an intense fall, when the fall twists the lower leg outward away from the knee.

When you suffer an MCL sprain, you will experience knee pain and swelling. Your knee may buckle toward the outside and you may experience tenderness or swelling on the inner side of your knee.

Lateral collateral ligament (LCL) The LCL is located on the outside of the knee, opposite the MCL. LCL injuries occur from forces or blows applied to the inside of the knee. These forces cause the knee to rotate out, putting pressure on the LCL, and resulting in a tear.

An LCL sprain is characterized by knee pain and swelling, as well. The knee may buckle toward the inside and there may be tenderness on the outside of the knee.

How Long Do I Have to Seek Compensation For a Knee Injury in Texas?

In Texas, the statute of limitations is two years from the date of the injury.  This means an injured person has to file a lawsuit within two years from the date of injury or their right to sue is lost forever. The statute of limitations does not apply to filing an insurance claim.

But, it is important to get in touch with a Houston knee injury lawyer as soon as possible after your injury. Once the two-year deadline passes, it can be difficult for even the best personal injury lawyers to negotiate a settlement. This is because the insurance company is aware that it is too late to file a lawsuit.

What If I’m Blamed For My Knee Injury?

Even if you think you may be at fault for the accident that caused your injury, don’t hesitate to contact our law firm. You may still be able to recover compensation even if you were careless or negligent. In personal injury cases, Texas uses a modified comparative negligence system with a 51% bar.

You can recover compensation for your injuries even if you share some of the blame as long as you’re not mostly responsible. When more than one party is at fault for an injury, the percentage of responsibility is assigned between culpable parties. Then, the injured person’s damages are reduced by their percentage of the liability.
