We’ll reference a unique, detailed ranking system used by commercial fleet telematics provider Geotab to provide a ranking list of cities best- and worst-equipped to deal with event traffic spikes. We’ll also look at the factors that cause traffic issues in each city, and touch on other fan-related safety issues.

Let’s start by considering the scale of the tournament and what that means for the American cities in question.

How The World Cup Affects Traffic In 11 Major U.S. Cities

The 2026 FIFA World Cup is likely to be one of the biggest sporting events ever staged. The 2022 final drew a record 1.5 billion viewers, while the last two tournaments involved one million people visiting Qatar and three million heading to Russia. Up to five million visitors are anticipated by the end of this year’s tournament.

The tournament, which ends on 19 July 2026, features 48 teams and 104 games played across 16 stadiums. And unlike most major sporting events, just over two-thirds (67%) of matches will be played on weekdays. That is already putting extra pressure on transport networks, commuter routes, and city infrastructure with tens of thousands of ticket holders heading to various city venues from Monday to Friday.

Tournament Stadium Requirements

FIFA rules mean that World Cup host countries must provide 40,000 (minimum) seater stadiums for group-stage matches, 60,000 seater venues for quarter-finals, and an 80,000-seat stadium for both the opening fixture and the World Cup final.

Even though teams are grouped into three geographic areas (West, Central, and East), some teams will still cross several time zones during the group stage, which means their fans must follow suit.

Transport and Fan Mobility

Within each host city region, public transport providers are running a temporarily increased number of services over longer operating hours, as well as dedicated stadium and fan-zone shuttles. And as security measures will limit private vehicle access near stadiums, public transport options (including pre-booked shuttle services) are considered the most reliable means of matchday travel. Despite this, many fans will decide to drive to the venue.

Geotab Host City Rankings

Geotab evaluated each host city using a weighted methodology, which measured according to the following proportional value.

  • 60% of the value relates to traffic conditions around stadiums
  • 40% of the value relates to conditions across the wider metropolitan area.

All ranking scores are between 0 and 10 (a higher score is better). The composite score blends four components: Congestion (35%), Idle Time (15%), Safety (25%), and Network Resilience (25%). The following cities were adjudged to be the best-equipped to accommodate the rise in visitors.

Foxborough/Boston ranks first overall due to its resilient suburban road networks and low idle periods, and is the only venue to achieve an 8+ score. Second-placed Houston has an established ability to manage major event traffic (despite wider metro congestion). And Mexico City (ranking third) benefits from a transport network that features the capacity to recover quickly following large-scale events.

But which venues/cities suffer most when it comes to hosting a busy event?

Non-U.S. sites, Toronto (BMO Field) and Vancouver (BC Place), recorded the lowest overall scores, each falling below a 5/10 rating. Both cities significantly struggle to manage large event crowds, often leading to severe disruption.

The highest U.S.-based venue, Los Angeles (SoFi Stadium), ranked among the most congested on the list: its congestion rate of 59.8% means it will inevitably suffer some long post-event traffic delays.

Traffic, Congestion, and Mobility Challenges

Major sporting events place significant pressure on transportation networks. A ParkMobile survey of 1,000 Atlanta-area residents attending games found that more than half planned to drive, 27.8% intended to use rideshare services, and 12.5% expected to use public transit. Traffic congestion often begins four to six hours before kickoff, while fan zones can create additional bottlenecks.

The impact extends beyond game attendees. In April 2026, Geotab surveyed 3,000 drivers across the U.S., Canada, and Mexico and found that driving during major sporting events is considered more stressful than a typical day by 79% of U.S. drivers, 76% of Canadian drivers, and 89% of Mexican drivers. Work-related travel is also affected, with delays averaging 27 minutes in the U.S., 29 minutes in Canada, and 41 minutes in Mexico.

Congestion-related concerns are widespread. More than three-quarters of U.S. drivers worry about wasted fuel from idling traffic, while 76% also view large-scale events as a road safety risk. Respondents identified improved traffic management as the most important factor in making major events safer and easier to navigate.

Around major venues, these challenges are compounded. At MetLife Stadium, traffic typically begins building four to six hours before large events. Analysis by Arity found that comparable events increased trip volumes by more than 50% and reduced average speeds on key approach roads from 44 mph to 20 mph.

Heavy congestion and full parking lots can also hinder emergency response efforts, with hospital travel times increasing by an estimated 3 minutes and 31 seconds during major local events.

Driver Behavior Risks by Host State

Arity analysis also identified several behavioral trends in specific areas that can contribute to congestion and crashes during a tournament.

Massachusetts

Distracted driving rates are 18% above the host average rates, and the highest of all World Cup host states.

Texas

High-speed driving is almost 60% higher in Texas than in other host states.

California

Sudden braking incidents happen 25% more often than they do in other host states.

Missouri

In Missouri, driving behavior is less of an issue across all key risk indicators than it is in all other venue areas.

Infrastructure and Transport Investments

To help with potential game-day logistical issues, U.S. host cities received $846 million through FIFA’s World Cup Grant Program, plus separate federal funding for security, emergency response, and public services. The Federal Transit Administration (FTA) has also invested $100.3 million in public transit improvements.

Several cities have announced specific service improvements.

Philadelphia

Southeastern Pennsylvania Transportation Authority has added a service on the Broad Street Line to and from the NRG Station. Approximately 31,000 riders per match are expected, with an estimated increased capacity, meaning the line can move up to 15,000 passengers per hour.

Houston

Houston METRO has expanded its rail and bus service to cover the June 7 to July 11 period, with the METRORail Red Line serving Houston’s NRG Stadium via the Stadium Park/Astrodome Station.

The Red Line operates every 6-12 minutes from 5 am to 1 am, with standard light rail fare costs remaining at $1.25. Additional improvements to park and ride, fan festival, and airport services will further help to mitigate private vehicle pressure around the NRG Stadium.

Dallas-Fort Worth

Dallas Area Rapid Transit increased its light rail and Trinity Railway Express services from 8 June until 19 July, and operates a 20-minute service throughout the day on major rail lines, plus a 30-minute TRE service during match days.

Boston

Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority had added a bus, subway, and Silver Line service during match days. The agency previously reported that it had sold over 17,450 Stadium Train mobile tickets on the first day of sales.

The Cost of Driving

Parking prices are expected to hit record levels during the tournament.

Current market data indicates that official park-and-ride options in Los Angeles may start at $55 and exceed $100, while resale parking for a quarter-final match near SoFi Stadium has been listed at between $256 and $454.

With parking often costing hundreds of dollars (even at locations miles from the stadium), driving may be both slower and significantly more expensive than public transport options. As Geotab data confirms, event-related traffic often involves longer journeys, unanticipated route changes, aggressive driving, parking difficulty, confusion over closures or diversions, and missed work or appointments.

Fan Mobility and Event Transportation Challenges

The 2026 FIFA World Cup is expected to generate unprecedented travel demand across North America. Soccer fandom in the United States grew 11% between 2020 and 2025, with 62.5 million fans now making up the world’s fifth-largest soccer audience.

Host cities are preparing for large-scale crowd movement through fan festivals, public watch parties, and neighborhood fan zones. Philadelphia will operate a fan festival throughout the tournament, while Seattle and the San Francisco Bay Area will host multiple fan zones designed to accommodate visitors beyond stadium locations.

However, soccer crowds often move differently than traditional U.S. sports audiences. Millions of international visitors will necessarily have to negotiate unfamiliar North American driving laws. One common point of confusion is likely to be the U.S. practice of allowing right turns on red lights, which is largely prohibited in New York City.

Penalties can be up to $500 in Georgia and Florida, and roughly $190 plus surcharges in New York City. Clear traffic guidance will be a key aid for international tourists throughout the World Cup.

Transportation Costs and Rideshare Challenges

Many World Cup venues are located well outside city centers, increasing both transportation complexity and expense for fans. Several host cities have introduced tournament transport plans:

  • AT&T Stadium will rely heavily on charter buses due to Arlington’s lack of a sufficient transport network.
  • Boston’s MBTA fare to Gillette Stadium will rise from under $20 to $80 round-trip on match days.
  • MetLife Stadium (the World Cup Final stadium) no longer offers public parking. After criticism over fares costing more than $150, NJ TRANSIT reduced round-trip tickets to $98, capped at 40,000 passengers per match day.

Data from the Qatar 2022 World Cup and comparable North American events tells us that surge pricing can reach 400% within two miles of a stadium. Rates also regularly rise 200-250% within five miles of a venue, and riders face a 65% chance of app disruptions during peak demand.

Peak Surge Periods

Modeling from major events at AT&T Stadium identified three surge windows.

  • 75 minutes before kickoff
  • Halftime
  • Up to 40 minutes after full-time.

For high-demand matches, fares within a 1.2-mile radius can rise 3-4 times beyond normal rates, turning a $35 trip into a $120-$150 fare.

Lowering Costs

Location and timing can significantly impact costs. During Copa América matches at the MetLife Stadium, a short walk reduced surge pricing by half (from 3.2x to 1.6x), which saved riders around $70.

The most effective strategy is to wait over 40 minutes after a game, and to walk between 0.7 and 1.5 miles away from the stadium. Data from the MetLife Stadium, AT&T Stadium, and Estadio Azteca suggest this approach can cut surge pricing by half as crowds disperse and more drivers become available. Uber has also announced a 30% ride discount if a user’s favorite team is knocked out of the tournament.

Weather can quickly prove to be a huge factor regarding demand. Heavy rain, extreme heat, or any kind of weather disruption can trigger rapid fare increases. During a playoff match in Toronto, UberX fares reportedly rose from CA$18 to CA$52 during a rainstorm.

Autonomous vehicle services may ease match-day transport pressures. Waymo has scheduled services in Atlanta, Houston, Los Angeles, Miami, and San Francisco.

Climate, Venue Conditions, and Environmental Risks

Weather and stadium design will significantly affect match conditions and the fan experience during the 2026 World Cup.

Stadium Environments

Several host cities (including Miami, Houston, Dallas, Kansas City, and Atlanta) face hot, humid summer conditions. Yet the following four venues feature retractable roofs and can operate as fully climate-controlled environments.

These venues remove the possibility of weather disruption. SoFi Stadium also features a fixed translucent roof, but does not feature full climate control.

Congestion is a major tournament issue. Traffic begins to build up to 6 hours before kickoff, trip volumes rise over 50% near stadiums, and emergency response times are affected. Surveys show 79% of U.S. drivers find event traffic more stressful than regular traffic, with delays of up to 41 minutes per trip: respondents cite traffic management as the main issue.

To help, transit agencies have added high-frequency rail and bus services, while U.S. cities received a total of $846 million in funding, as well as additional federal transit investment.

For fans, rideshare options are likely to be limited and expensive, with surge pricing potentially meaning costs will rise 400%. Peak congestion occurs 75 minutes before a game starts, during halftime, and straight after a match. Walking 10-15 minutes away from stadiums can help fans save up to 60%.

Beyond congestion considerations, driving into a city and parking is an expensive option: in Los Angeles, it can cost a staggering $450 to park near a stadium, with other areas seeing parking hikes.

Travelling international fans can create unusual traffic patterns, such as shorter arrival windows and unexpected congestion spikes. The vastly increased inner-city levels of alcohol consumption may also be an issue.

And weather may be a disruptive factor, with heat waves expected in southern U.S. cities and hurricane season risks in Miami, Houston, and Atlanta.

So, the World Cup will put severe strain on urban mobility systems, with congestion, pricing spikes, and weather risks all interconnected issues. Hopefully, expanded transit services and recommended walking strategies can significantly reduce fan costs and delays and limit anticipated problems. Ultimately, the world’s biggest tournament will put all involved cities to the test, and the results will inevitably vary.
