## Texas Motorcycle Statistics

There are more than [400,000](https://www.txdot.gov/) motorcycles registered in the Lone Star State. With so many motorcycles on the [roadways](https://attorneybrianwhite.com/blog/motorcycle-roadway-hazards/) and a year-round climate suitable for riding, Texas has hundreds of great places to ride anytime you’re ready.

[Motorcycle ownership in Texas has more than doubled since 2002](https://www.iihs.org/api/datastoredocument/bibliography/2225). Part of the change is due to the large increase in the state’s population since 2010,  but it’s also due to gas price fluctuations. Whatever the reason, Texas riders enjoy taking to the road nearly year-round.

## What Are the Legal Requirements for Motorcyclists in Texas?

Texas [requires](https://www.dps.texas.gov/section/driver-license/motorcycle-license) you to have a [license specific to motorcycles](https://attorneybrianwhite.com/blog/houston-motorcycle-licensing-requirements-lawyer/) before you can ride. This is either an M license or an M license endorsement on a standard driver’s license. To get this motorcycle endorsement or license, you must already have a Texas driver’s license.

You’ll also need to take at least one [motorcycle safety](https://attorneybrianwhite.com/blog/motorcycle-safety-tips-in-texas/) course before you’re ready to ride with a Texas license. This [basic rider course](https://www.tdlr.texas.gov/mot/find-schools.htm) ensures that you know how to ride and understand Texas’s motorcycle laws.

Scooters (or mopeds) have also become quite popular in larger cities. They can run much longer distances on less fuel, reducing traffic congestion and air pollution. They have excellent gas mileage and are inexpensive to operate and insure.

If you’re planning to ride any two-wheeled machine that goes no more than 30 miles an hour with an engine smaller than 49cc, you only need a Class C license. This standard license allows you to drive passenger vehicles. You will, however, [need to have similar insurance for your motorcycle](https://attorneybrianwhite.com/faqs/do-i-need-motorcycle-insurance-in-texas/) or scooter just as you would for a car. Taking one of Texas’s motorcycle safety courses would be helpful no matter what you’re planning to ride.

## Why Do You Need a Texas Motorcycle Safety Course?

The state requires you to take at least one [motorcycle safety course](https://attorneybrianwhite.com/blog/texas-motorcycle-safety-courses/) to get your license. The course runs two days (16 hours) and is held throughout the state at various locations in different venues.

The rider’s course is intended to teach new riders beginner basics that they may not know. Experienced riders can benefit from re-learning their skills, and it’s also helpful for longer-term riders who didn’t take a course before it became a requirement. The classes are intended to teach riders the basics of handling a motorcycle, including accelerating, braking, shifting, etc.

Completing a motorcycle safety course may include a discount on insurance by some providers. It is also required for some ticket dismissals.

## Can You Get a License Without Taking a Motorcycle Safety Course?

In short, no. But you can buy a motorcycle without a license; you just can’t legally ride it on the street.

Taking at least one of the Texas motorcycle safety courses helps keep you legal so you can get an M license.

If you decide to ride a motorcycle without a current license, you’ll have other, more complex problems. You may face fines for not having a license and for riding without insurance. There’s also the possibility of being arrested, especially if you have multiple violations, are riding with a suspended license, or are riding without insurance.
